We awoke to perfect golfing weather for our round on Pinta organised by Alison to celebrate the first of many events marking the end of her year as Ladies Captain. In teams of 4, we played a Stableford round with prizes for Nearest the Pin on holes 5 & 15, 1st & 2nd placed Team scores, and 1st & 2nd Individual scores. We all enjoyed a drink in the sun & biscuits on the Pinta terrace after our golf, then repaired back home to relax and change before our evening out.
Alison organised a lovely evening for us all at Hexagone; a glass (or 2) of fizz on arrival with lots of opportunity to chat to everyone before sitting down for our meal. Kris prepared some pretty name tags with chocolate for every lady, so we all knew where to sit & what dishes we had chosen! Alison then presented prizes as follows: Nearest the pins on 5th & 15 holes: Gina Beadle & Allison Hudson The team scores were all very close but the winners were: 1st Allison Hudson, Beate Kernen, Sarah Matthew’s & Elaine Marshall 2nd Brenda Manley, Michelle Richardson, Liz Reid & ghost Barbro Thoren Plus an additional team prize for Sandi Beatson, Theresa Russell & Karen Stanton, who despite all playing really well somehow managed to score the least points! Individual runner up with 39 points (on C/B 17 pts back 9) was Bernadette Barrow, and the Lady Captain’s Farewell Trophy went to Barbro Thoren with 39 points (20 pts on back 9). Congratulations Barbro! The Trophy for the winner of the Ladies Knockout competition 2025, which was completed a few weeks ago, was then presented by Alison to Lizee McGraw (runner-up Åsa Baggstrőm) We all then enjoyed a delicious 3 course dinner with plenty of lively chatter at all the tables. Whilst we were served coffee, Alison thanked all the ladies, past lady captains, golfers, non-golfers, friends and helpers, for all their support during her year, with particular thanks to Jane Conyers for all her work in organising social activities throughout the year, Kris van der Zee for her tireless efforts collecting monies due for all competitions & events, and Sue Mortimer for her supporting role as Ladies Vice Captain. Alison also gave special thanks to her husband Ian for his undinting support throughout the year. Sue then thanked Alison on behalf of all the ladies present for the work and effort she had put in during her year ensuring we were all kept busy with plenty of golf regardless of what the weather threw at us! Sue highlighted the very successful Autumn Tour at Praia D’El Rey and the two Ladies Away Days at Álamos and Boa Vista. She then presented Alison with an envelope from the ladies containing donations signifying their thanks, and a farewell card created by Kris. Alison explained that she would be buying a pair of earrings with the money by which to remember her time as Lady Captain, so we will all look forward to seeing what she chooses! We were then all whisked off home by taxi before we changed into pumpkins, with memories of a great ladies night out, thank you Alison. Sue Mortimer Ladies Vice Captain The Algarve Winter appears to be finally behind us and 56 players enjoyed the early spring sunshine on a respondent Gramacho course, if you’re reading this in Northern Europe look away now…. (it was 20 degrees and more today)
We played a Gramacho course in great condition, hard and fast greens and lush fairways, thankfully the rough has finally been cut too! 14 teams of 4 played “Yellow Ball”. Each team had a yellow ball which was used in rotation and counted double points. Two scores to count. Plus, If you handed back the yellow ball at the end of the round your team received a 2 point bonus. In addition there were prizes for nearest the pin in 2 on hole 3 and nearest the pin on hole 10, won by John Marshall and Sandi Beatson. As for the main event… In 5th place, taking the converted chocolates was the “couples in buggies” team of Chris and Lorry Dearden and Dave and Maralyn Lightburn scoring 117 points. In 4th were Judy and Robert Lench, Steph O Riley and David Legg with an impressive 121 points, earning them each a bottle of the excellent Paxa Savi B… In 3rd on countback were Richard Turner, Christian Bartel, Ulf Baggstrom and his guest Mickeal Svensson with a superb 123 points, their reward was a pair of specialist beers. Matching that score, but with a better back 9 of 66 ( against 51) were the team of Hugh Duncan, Shirley Turner, Jurg Kernen and Elaine Marshall taking 2nd place and a bottle of whiskey. One point more, our winners, with an incredible 124 points, was the team of John Marshall, Jos da Raaji, Juliet Smith and Sandi Beatson. If you assume the yellow ball is a silent 3rd score, then 108 was par against team handicap; therefore the winning team was a sensational -16 under par, please note Mr Handicap secretary!! 😊 Many players commented how much they enjoyed the strategy of the format, whilst others cursed the yellow ball and the extra pressure it brought to each shot! In all 10 out of 14 teams returned their yellow balls and received 2 bonus points. The team in 2nd place were lamenting a watery grave for their yellow ball on the 17th, had they managed to bring it home and receive their 2 point bonus they would have been the winners…. its only a game guys! What a glorious day for the competition today, most welcome after all the rain we experienced recently. Despite being oversubscribed initially, 60 players took part today. As is often the case, we were a little short on players for the ladies' team so we are most grateful for the gents who volunteered to identify as ladies, temporarily. Our thanks go to Ian McMahon, Ian Wylie, Rob Lench (sporting a fetching bright pink wig!) Gernot MacSchmid and Chris Dearden. Did that make a difference? We will see. Sadly, the Gents' Captain was unable to play due to a hand injury. Did that make a difference? Here are the results:
Gents: won 7 games Ladies: won 6 games So the Gents team won today! The Gents each took home a box of lovely Belgian chocolates. Well done to the winners! This event also raises funds for the Captains' charity and 90 euros will go towards the charity funds today. Thank you to everyone who played today and I hope you all enjoyed your game, whether you won or not. And a big thank you to Kris van der Zee who collected all the entry fees on behalf of the Captains. The next Gents Captain v Ladies Captain event is scheduled for October. See you there!
